THE striking new Chevrolet Camaro SS is set to excite spectators with its Australian public debut at this weekend's Nikon SuperGP on the Gold Coast.

A bright yellow Camaro SS 6.2-litre V8, one of only two right-hand drive examples in the country, will be in action on track as an official course car throughout the four-day event starting today.

The head-turning muscle machine is being launched for Australian sale during the Nikon SuperGP and will be the star of a mouth-watering American-car line-up presented by its importers, Performax International.

The Camaro SS will be joined in its on-track duties by current examples of the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 coupe and the Chevy Silverado 2500HD sports truck, which also feature in Performax's exclusive showroom catalogue.

The Mustang runs a 403 kW, supercharged 5.4-litre V8, while the mighty Silverado's 6.6-litre turbodiesel V8 gives it 4.5-tonne towing capacity plus luxury-car comfort for a family of five.

A stunning retro-style successor to the original 1967 Camaro, the all-new car has undergone conversion to right-hand drive at Performax International's Gympie, Queensland, factory and is ready for registration in all Australian States and Territories.

Nikon SuperGP spectators will be reminded of the muscle car heritage when Australia's most famous racing Camaro, Kevin Bartlett's Channel Nine-sponsored machine, roars out on to the Surfers Paradise street circuit with its original driver in the Australian Legends Category, which will be an exciting new feature of the annual motorsport extravaganza.

Bartlett was also on hand to help launch the new 318 kW Camaro during the annual V8 Supercar drivers lunch, which was sponsored by Performax International at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The Nikon SuperGP involvement will highlight Performax International's position as Australia's leading importer of new US-made passenger vehicles over the past 20 years.
