Yamaha Motor Australia has released an all new version of its legendary XT250 that takes the lightweight and easy to ride on/off road model to the next stage of excellence.

The engine boasts strong, usable power across the full rpm range, with especially strong torque in the low- to mid-speed range to improve trail riding performance as well as offering a new level of comfort and enjoyment in around-town riding.

In addition to the universal ideals of light weight, slim feel and compactness, the body built around its semi-double cradle frame has been designed for optimum concentration of mass and lower centre of gravity for ideal overall machine balance.

Engine capacity is increased from 223cc to 250cc and the new engine is mounted in a new-design frame that features less unsprung weight thanks to lighter wheel assemblies to achieve a big boost in riding enjoyment, running speeds and stronger off road performance.

The new model sports a 249cc air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve, single-cylinder engine. The bore has been expanded to create short-stroke cylinder dimensions of 74.0 x 58.0mm, and with a compression ratio of 9.5 to 1 the new engine produces both more power and more torque than before. Strong torque and sharp response characterises this engine across the entire rpm range.

Features like a lightweight forged piston and a plated cylinder with excellent heat-dissipation characteristics contribute to the powerful torque across the entire rpm range.

A 33mm diameter vacuum type carburettor is adopted with optimised settings that clear the latest emissions standards. To achieve an ideal balance with the 249cc displacement, the inertial mass of the crankshaft has been reduced slightly. The ratio between the exhaust volume and the inertial mass of the crankshaft (VI ratio) has been lowered compared to the existing XT225 from 0.38 to 0.32. This has helped achieve outstanding ease of use, even at walking speed and excellent drivability in the mid- to high-speed ranges.

Improved mass concentration means a lighter feel and better handling, which is the goal of the new-design semi-double cradle frame. Compared to the existing model, the rigidity balance of the frame has been optimised with slightly higher lateral and torsional rigidity.

The newly designed front suspension features inner tubes with strategic reduction of tube wall thickness and outer tubes with a tapered design. Plus the adoption of a lightweight aluminium under-bracket and a lightweight design for the meter assembly help achieve a big weight reduction in the handlebar assembly. The combined effect of these measures contributes to lighter handling as well as outstanding cushioning effect. Front wheel travel is a full 225mm.

For the rear suspension a bottom linked type Monocross suspension with an aluminium cylinder in the shock unit is adopted for lighter weight and good heat dissipation characteristics. This suspension provides a soft cushioning feeling in the early and middle stages of compression when the stroke is shorter and a gradually stronger, more resistant cushioning as compression approaches full stroke. This creates a more comfortable ride and lighter, more agile machine. The wheel travel is a large 180mm.

The front brake adopts a 245mm disc and an asymmetrical 2-pot caliper. The overall rigidity of the system has been optimised from the pad material to the rigidity of the brake hose in order to achieve good braking power and improve modulation. The rear brake adopts a 203mm disc instead of a drum brake. The master cylinder of the rear brake is designed in a single unit with the sub-tank to contribute to better concentration of mass.

The headlight mounts a lightweight halogen light (60W/55W) with a 133mm diameter lens. Also, a speed sensor type multi-function LCD digital speedometer (including clock, twin tripmeter functions) is adopted. The green background lighting of the meter panel ensures good visibility at night as well as in the daytime. These features further contribute to the lightness of the new front assembly design for lighter handling.

The new design carries on the XT identity with a look defined by a solid sense of core in the central mass of the machine and peripheral parts that display a good sense of sharp compactness.

The fuel tank is increased to 10 litres capacity while the shroud portion is defined by a smooth sense of connection to give a look of compactness to the exterior.

The maximum turning angle of the handlebars is close to that of a trials bike at 51° and this combines with the short 1,360mm wheelbase to provide a tight turning radius of 1.9m for extra manoeuvrability.

Other features include an air induction (AI) system for cleaner exhaust emissions, adoption of a spark arrester in the muffler and retractable brake and shift pedals.

The 2008 XT250 is available now in Arctic White for just $6499 and comes with a full 24 month, unlimited kms, parts and labour warranty.

2008 XT250 Key Features:

  • For 2008, a bigger engine and extensive upgrades take the XT to the next level of fun and all-around function.
  • All-new styling including a bigger gas tank reinforce the XT’s looks and performance.
  • Long-travel suspension and over 285mm of ground clearance live under a seat only 805mm from the ground.
  • Electric start makes firing up the larger 249cc four-stroke effortless.
  • New, 245mm front disc and 203mm rear disc brakes combine to deliver superb stopping power on both paved and unpaved surfaces.

Engine:

  • New 249cc air-cooled four-stroke with 9.5:1 compression makes maximum power at 7500 rpm and maximum torque at 6500 rpm for great on- and off-road performance.
  • A light-and-strong forged piston inside a plated cylinder helps dissipate heat more efficiently, increasing both performance and durability.
  • New 33mm vacuum-type carburettor keeps the airflow up for excellent performance and throttle response.
  • A lightened crankshaft helps provide quick responsive power.
  • Wide-ratio five-speed transmission for maximum power and performance in a wide range of terrain and conditions.
  • Hassle-free pushbutton electric starting adds extra convenience and reliability.
  • Engine is mounted high in the frame to provide an incredible 285mm of ground clearance.
  • Automatic cam chain tensioner means minimal maintenance and longer engine life.

Chassis/Suspension:

  • A new-design semi-double-cradle steel frame achieves a lighter, nimbler feel through greater mass centralization. Greater lateral and torsional rigidity and reduced weight of the lower frame parts help produce light, stable handling.
  • A new front fork with 226mm of travel and revised damping soaks up the rough stuff, both on-road and off. A new aluminium lower triple clamp keeps the weight down.
  • Maximum turning angle of the handlebar is 51 degrees—almost like a trials machine. Combined with a short wheelbase of only 1,360mm, the XT250 has a super-tight turning radius for excellent manoeuvrability.
  • A new rear shock provides 180mm of wheel travel through a progressive, Monocross-style linkage system for a smooth ride.
  • 21-inch front and 18-inch rear aluminium wheels are extremely durable and reduce unsprung weight for enhanced suspension performance and handling.
