• New Range Rover Velar delivers five-star ANCAP safety rating, elegant interior design and beautifully balanced exterior
  • Luxury SUV scores an impressive 93 per cent for adult occupant protection and 85 per cent for child occupant protection
  • Fourth member of Range Rover family has comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance features includes Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection

5 October 2017, Sydney Australia – The Range Rover Velar has achieved a five-star ANCAP rating, confirming one of the world's most desirable luxury SUVs as among the safest too.

The fourth member of the Range Rover family scored 93 per cent for adult occupant protection, 85 per cent for child occupant protection and 74 per cent for pedestrian protection.

"The Velar arrives in our market with strong all-round safety performance resulting in a 5 star ANCAP safety rating" said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Mr James Goodwin

"Autonomous emergency braking is provided as a standard feature on the Velar and it operates effectively at high and low-speeds, and can detect and react to pedestrians."

Velar features a comprehensive suite of safety systems, including Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection.

The advanced technology can detect a collision risk with cars or pedestrians in the road ahead and automatically apply the brakes. The system was awarded a maximum six marks in the Pedestrian detection tests.

Matthew Wiesner, Managing Director Jaguar Land Rover Australia, said: "The light, stiff and exceptionally strong aluminium intensive body provides the foundation for a five-star ANCAP score. Allied to pioneering suspension technology and a comprehensive range of driver assistance systems, the new Range Rover Velar is not just one of the most beautiful SUVs in the world – it's also one of the safest."

By combining strong crash protection with advanced active safety systems, the Velar helps drivers to avoid accidents while providing excellent security to mitigate the effects of a collision if the worst does happen.

ANCAP's findings state: "The Velar saw 'Good' levels of protection offered to occupants in the side impact test which replicates a traditional 'T-bone' crash, as well as the oblique pole test which replicates a run-off road crash where the vehicle and driver's head strikes a tree or light pole.

"Maximum points were scored for adult occupants in these two lateral crash tests, and child occupant protection – which looks at the protection offered for a 6 year old and 10 year old child – was also good.""

Range Rover Velar is available with an all-star cast of advanced driver assistance systems including:

  • Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection uses a forward-facing stereo camera to determine if a collision is imminent – full braking is triggered automatically to avoid collisions altogether, or to mitigate the effects
  • Reverse Traffic Detection uses radar to monitor vehicles approaching from either side when reversing. An orange warning illuminates in the door mirrors to alert the driver to any potential danger
  • Matrix-Laser LED headlights extend the range of full beam to 550 metres. The Adaptive Front Lighting system matches the light beam to the steering wheel angle, while the matrix technology selectively dims individual LEDs to maintain optimum light distribution without dazzling oncoming traffic
  • Lane Keep Assist detects unintentional lane drift and applies corrective counter-steering to maintain lane position
  • Driver Condition Monitor senses driver fatigue by monitoring steering, brake and accelerator inputs to provide alerts when tiredness is detected
