The species continues to evolve.

The X9 EVOLUTION is the Piaggio 'maxi' GT tourer intended to meet the most advanced mobility standards. With exemplary performance and comfort, the Evolution is extremely manoeuvrable and handles both town and longer runs in absolute safety.

Elegantly styled, with attention paid to every detail, this vehicle has exclusive equipment and top technology and cycle parts. Its powerful, ecological engines already meet Euro 2 standards.

Three years from its launch, with over 100,000 units sold overall, the PIAGGIO X9 EVOLUTION range, which recently grew to include a sparkling new 250cc.

Hence, three different versions of the X9 Evolution 500 now feature within the Piaggio 'maxi' GT range, which was recently also given a new 250cc with very snappy performance.
The 'classic' X9 Evolution 500, a comfortable and high-prestige vehicle with exceptional standard equipment including an automatic stand and PICS (Piaggio Integrated Communication System) featuring RDS radio, interphone and hands-free mobile phone, is now backed up by two new models.

The Piaggio X9 offers the easiest handling in the line-up of medium and large displacement tourer scooters. Its Evolution version includes a series of design and technical changes, starting with the sophisticated new front shield design that enhances the X9's elegant, distinctive image. The sharp lines of the new front shield feature large headlights and taper into new painted rear-view mirrors with built-in indicators, making the X9 Evolution even more aerodynamic.
Improved design and function are evident in the excellent finish and details on all the Piaggio X9 Evolution versions there are new chrome lamps, a double-stitched saddle and a two-level windscreen adjustable to three positions, this last already available on the 500cc and now standard on the lower displacements as well.

The sides have been redesigned to give the X9 Evolution a new shape, with white transparents and an elegant, car-style prism effect within the front and rear indicators.

The X9 Evolution's visual impact suggests comfortable and pleasurable long-distance riding as well as the technological evolution on the new versions.

PIAGGIO X9 EVOLUTION RANGE

The engines

The evolution of the Piaggio X9 range concerns the very heart of the vehicle. The engines on the 500, 250 and 125cc versions are all extremely environment-friendly. They have markedly reduced fuel consumption, offer fluid running and manoeuvrability at any speed and top performance in their categories.
The electronic injection control and two-way catalyst on the Piaggio MASTER X9 Evolution 500cc engine and the secondary air system on the Piaggio QUASAR X9 Evolution 250 and Piaggio LEADER 125 engines, both also equipped with two-way catalytic converters, ensure that the entire X9 Evolution range meets Euro 2 emissions standards. This is further proof of Piaggio's commitment to environmental issues.

The new-generation Piaggio MASTER on the X9 500 Evolution differs from the earlier version starting from its design — it has a new transmission cover and new muffler. Both elements further reduce running noise and thereby increase comfort, which is guaranteed in any case by an almost total lack of vibration due to the use of a counter-rotating balancer shaft.

The new exhaust with a two-way catalytic converter is an efficient back up for a more evolved injection system. It enhances power and lowers consumption but also ensures comfortable, enjoyable riding in any conditions.

New engine mapping ensures more fluid power output, better handling at slow running and a smoother progression to high rpm, making this vehicle an extremely pleasant ride. The new CVT pulleys optimise pick-up and smooth running.

The X9 Evolution engines

  • X9 Evolution 500: single-cylinder 4 stroke 460cc, 4 valves, liquid cooled, electronically controlled injection, counter-rotating balancer shaft and two-way catalytic exhaust. Maximum power is 39 hp (29 Kw) at 7,500 rpm; torque is 43 Nm at 5,500 rpm.
  • X9 Evolution 250: single-cylinder 4 stroke 244.3cc, 4 valves, liquid cooled, with secondary air system and two-way catalytic exhaust. Power output is 22 hp (16.4 Kw) at 8,250 rpm; torque is 20.2 Nm at 6,500 rpm.
  • X9 Evolution 125: single-cylinder 4 stroke 124cc, 4 valves, liquid cooled, with secondary air system and two-way catalytic exhaust. Power output is 15 hp (11 Kw) at 10,000 rpm; torque is 12 Nm at 8,000 rpm.

Cycle parts

The creation of the new X9 Evolution versions led to further cycle parts refinements on a vehicle that was in any case extremely safe and pleasant to ride.

On the X9 Evolution 500, these changes include a new rear wheel with a five-spoke rim and a new, wide-section sport tread tyre measuring 150/70x14" for improved handling on rough road surfaces and more comfortable riding. There is a new stronger, larger-diameter (41 mm) fork for precision at high-speed running.

Ride safety on the X9 Evolution 500 gets a fillip with new Brembo 'Serie Oro' floating callipers for exceptional braking in any conditions.
The brakes on the X9 Evolution 500 and X9 Evolution 500 Street consist of a stainless steel double disk, 260 mm in diameter, in front and a 240 mm stainless steel disk at the rear.

The X9 Evolution 250 also has an exceptional brake system composed of three 240 mm stainless steel disks.

On all the versions of the X9 Evolution, the complete braking system (the left brake lever simultaneously actions the left front and rear disks, while the right lever actions the front right disk) permits braking in very limited space and absolute safety in all riding conditions.

Equipment

The equipment on this maxi scooter is exceptional and even more complete than on the earlier version of the X9. It has analogue/digital instrumentation with an on-board computer and standard accessories including an automatic stand and new PICS communication system on the X9 Evolution. The PICS system is optional on the 125 and 250cc versions.

In line with new EU legislation, all the displacements of the X9 Evolution have their lights always on. In order to meet the standard specifying that lights be switched on even during the day, the X9 Evolution has a mechanism that automatically switches on the low beam when the scooter is started.

The X9 500 Evolution also has an automatic engine-stop switch operated by a motorcycle-type position sensor in case the rider falls off the bike.

Finally, there is a new seat unlocking system (besides the usual flip-up lever inside the front shield) on all the versions. An electric-command button on the inside front shield operates the system. The 500cc X9 Evolution also has exclusive remote-controlled electronic seat opening. One click suffices to open the seat, which an electro-hydraulic piston then raises automatically.

Under-seat storage is a generous 45 litres. It is fitted with a courtesy light and a 12V socket to recharge a mobile phone battery. There are another two storage flaps on the inside of the shield. The X9 Evolution has a pull-out seat cover which comes in handy when parking in the rain. Security equipment includes an electronic immobiliser anti-theft system with a coded key as well as a steel ring under the footrest to fix a chain.

The Piaggio X9 Evolution comes in four stylish metallic colours: Graphite Black, Smoky Grey, Excalibur Grey and Imperial Blue.
