AUCKLAND, New Zealand (24 February, 2023) – Leading NZ tyre supplier has praised Transporting New Zealand on the announcement of The Green Compact framework, which outlines a pathway to decarbonising the commercial road transport industry toward 2050.
Launched today by Minister for Transport, the Honourable Michael Wood, and Chief Executive of Transporting New Zealand, Nick Leggett, The Green Compact framework aligns to best practices from around the world through six pillars: alternative fuels, efficient logistics, collective mobility, efficient vehicles, driver training and green infrastructure.
Speaking at the landmark Green Compact launch, Bridgestone's Director of New Zealand Business, John Staples, welcomed the significant and progressive step forward for the industry.
"Congratulations to Transporting New Zealand for taking a leading approach to road transport decarbonisation through the launch of The Green Compact framework. Bridgestone will wholeheartedly support this framework and contribute where we can to the efforts of research and implementation into the industry," Mr Staples said.
"This framework has strong alignment to the global and local priorities of Bridgestone, in line with our vision towards 2050 of evolving towards a sustainable solutions company. Like the framework outlined in The Green Compact, Bridgestone has a global commitment towards carbon neutrality by 2050, and we can only do this by working together with our customers and the industry to achieve our goals in partnership. It is impossible to do this alone."
Underpinning Bridgestone's steadfast support of The Green Compact are the values of the Bridgestone E8 Commitment: Energy, Ecology, Efficiency, Extension, Economy, Emotion, Ease and Empowerment.
The Bridgestone E8 Commitment is designed to create purpose and process for the company, partners and customers for the development of a more sustainable society.
According to Mr Staples, there are clear synergies between the pillars of The Green Compact and work that Bridgestone is already focussed on.
"There is clear alignment between the six pillars of The Green Compact and Bridgestone's focus for the industry. We already offer customers innovative products that contribute to reductions in carbon emissions through our low rolling resistance products and Bandag retread solutions, as well as our Webfleet telematics solutions for fleet optimisation," Mr Staples added.
"We are encouraged by The Green Compact framework as it outlines the key focal areas where we can provide support towards industry decarbonisation.
"We all have a role to play in supporting a more sustainable industry, and through the Green Compact framework, Transporting New Zealand will identify the steps that fleets, operators, government and industry suppliers, such as Bridgestone, can take to contribute towards the goal of a decarbonised trucking industry in NZ," he said.
