TOWING AND TOURING
Australia is a land with the majority of capital cities dotted across the 26,000km coastline—all of which are connected by a vast road network—making range and efficiency key amongst towing motorists. Fuelled by feedback from Australian Motorists, Isuzu engineers have focused on fine-tuning the drivability and capability of the All-New MU-X for Australia; maximising range, versatility and capacity whilst touring, towing and exploring, without compromising on occupant comfort and safety on Australian roads.
With close to half of all MU-X owners choosing an Isuzu to tow their caravans, boats and trailers, it has never been more important to have the capability to tow up to 3.5-tonnes braked.
Debuting in Australia in late-2020, the third-generation D-MAX introduced a new ladder-frame chassis constructed extensively of high-tensile steel—affording the D-MAX increased strength, rigidity and load-carrying capacities. The All-New Isuzu MU-X shares the same proven chassis design, but employs a revised rear-subframe to accommodate the heavily-overhauled five-link rear coil-spring suspension—which affords the MU-X the ability of 3.5-tonne towing*.
Stiffer and stronger than the previous MU-X, the rear suspension geometry focuses on mass management, minimising vehicle pitch and squat when loaded up and controlling body roll when on the road. Whereas the front axle benefits from Isuzu's new and vastly-improved independent front suspension introduced in the new D-MAX. The improved front double wishbone design sports a combination of high-mounted upper-control arms, stiffer spring rates, dampers valved for varying terrain surfaces and a thicker anti-roll bar to mitigate body roll. All of which translates to improved overall vehicle composure, handling and dynamics when loaded up and on the road.
By combining a new ladder-frame chassis with the uprated-coil spring suspension—which have been optimised for carrying-capacity without compromising ride or handling—not only have Isuzu Engineers increased the All-New MU-X's braked towing capacity to 3.5-tonnes, but they've increased the payload capacity, Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM), Gross Combination Mass (GCM) and axle loads.
With increased towing capacity comes a welcomed increase in carrying capacities, with Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) and Gross Combination Mass (GCM) now up to 2,800kg and 5,900kg respectively. Front and rear axle loads have also increased by +100kg and +50kg respectively, allowing for more room for accessory and frontal protection fitment. Total vehicle payload capacity has increased and varies across the range, with the MU-X LS-M able to carry up to 665kg, ideal for families that don't pack light.
Engineered for touring these vast distances, the unique Australian-specification 4JJ3-TCX 3-litre, turbo-diesel engine in the All-New MU-X delivers linear and progressive torque across the entire rev-range. Working smarter, not harder, it's a dependable and frugal powerplant designed for touring and towing. In addition to the tried and proven Diesel Particulate Diffuser (DPD) introduced in the previous-generation MU-X, exhaust emissions have further been reduced by integrating a maintenance-free Lean Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) Trap (LNT) and H2S Catalytic Converter into the exhaust system, which significantly reduces harmful NOx and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) emissions. On the induction side of the engine, a pre-fabricated pathway in the internal wheelhouse panel of the inner-guard allows for easy installation of an engine snorkel—an unique Australian-specification feature that saves both time and money during the fitment process.
With fuel range an important consideration when on the road, the fuel tank capacity has been increased to 80-litres—23% larger than in the previous-generation MU-X. This important update was fuelled directly by feedback from towing and touring motorists, and with official combined-cycle fuel consumption figures returning 7.8-8.3-litres/100km, the best of the All-New MU-X range has the capability of travelling upwards of 1000-kilometers on a single tank of diesel.
Ensuring optimal visibility whilst travelling outback roads at night, all variants feature Bi-LED headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRL). Featuring auto-levelling and automatic high beam control, these next-generation Bi-LED headlights throw more light wider and further down the road than compared with the previous-generation MU-X. Rear LED combination taillights are also standard across all variants, with LS-U and LS-T further benefiting from LED front fog lights for a wider light throw.
Engineered for Australia's warmer and cooler climates, all models feature front row and 2nd and 3rd row roof-mounted air-conditioning vents with rear controls. Allowing the driver and passenger to set their individual climate preference, both the MU-X LS-U and LS-T feature dual-zone air-conditioning control for the front row—while the MU-X LS-T adds a touch more comfort in the cooler months with variably controlled heated front seats.
The Isuzu UTE Genuine Accessories catalogue has also expanded, with a selection of towing focused accessories engineered specifically for Isuzu vehicles. Of course, there is a genuine tow bar kit, with either a 7-pin or 12-pin plug for additional auxiliaries. Also available is a pair of ClearView extendable towing mirrors, with power-fold function and integrated Blind-Spot Monitoring alert lights and LED indicators. For caravaners with big vans, a genuine Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH) is available for the MU-X for the first time, which effectively levels out the vehicle and caravan in tow, mitigating the dangers of trailer sway. Adding an extra-layer of assurance with heavy loads, all models come equipped with Trailer Sway Control (TSC) which intervenes if trailer sway is detected, bringing the vehicle and trailer back under control. Just like the aforementioned WDH, a genuine Electronic Brake Controller can be optioned at any Isuzu UTE Dealer too, offering precise control over heavier trailers and caravans over 2000kg that legally require electric brakes. Allowing you to get the most out of your vehicle when towing, all of these genuine accessories have been designed and tested to work in harmony with the on-board systems, and in the case of the ClearView mirrors, in accordance to local regulations—which do vary from state to state—an important aspect to be aware of when towing across state borders.
Packed with features that has solidified the MU-X as a favourite amongst Australian-families for close to a decade, along with new innovations and the latest in safety and driver assistant technologies, the All-New MU-X has been engineered to get the most out of touring, travelling and towing in Australia, both on-road and off.
ENGINE AND DRIVETRAIN
Standard across the All-New MU-X range is the new 4JJ3-TCX 3-litre, common-rail, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel engine; an evolution of the famed 4JJ1-TC HI that powered the previous generation-MU-X. First debuted in the new-generation D-MAX, the 4JJ3-TCX in the MU-X further benefits from an additional Lean NOx Trap (LNT) and H2S Catalytic Converter that significantly reduces harmful Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) and Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S) exhaust emissions.
Compared with the previous-generation MU-X, power and torque outputs have been increased to 140kW at 3,600rpm and 450Nm at 1,600-2,600rpm—a 10kW and 20Nm improvement over the preceding engine respectively. Testament to how torque-efficient the 4JJ3-TCX is, midrange torque has also been further improved, generating 400Nm from 1,400rpm through to 3,250rpm. Impressively, 300Nm is produced from just 1,000rpm—just above idle—a benefit to four-wheel drivers who require low-down torque for crawling up hills in low-range. The result is a linear delivery of torque across the entire rev-range and a welcomed improvement in both drivability and performance, particularly when towing or under load.
Revered as the industry benchmark of durability and dependability amongst diesel engines, the 4JJ3-TCX features new hardware componentry to further improve its reputation as the industry standard. Comprising of a new engine block, cylinder-head, crankshaft and lightweight aluminium pistons, the 4JJ3-TCX breathes through a new intake system that feeds the new electronically controlled Variable Geometry System (VGS) Turbocharger, which has been optimised to reduce turbo-lag—improving throttle-response, efficiency and longevity. A new front mounted intercooler is positioned higher with shorter pipping to further improve engine-response. Mounted off the back of the VGS Turbocharger is Isuzu's tried and proven, maintenance-free Diesel Particulate Diffuser (DPD), which has been further revised to increase efficiency and reduce exhaust emissions.
Unique to the All-New MU-X to further improve on lowering emissions, is the introduction of a maintenance-free Lean NOx Trap (LNT) and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Slip Catalytic Converter, mounted in the exhaust system which further curbs harmful exhaust emissions. The LNT minimises Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions through catalytic conversion without the need of commonly-employed Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems such as an AdBlue exhaust additive, which would require periodic Adblue top-ups by the driver. With no adverse effect to engine induction efficiency, Isuzu's LNT is an effective aftertreatment solution that collects NOx during lean-burn engine operations and converts it to diatomic Nitrogen (N2), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and water vapour (H2O) during cyclic catalytic conversion. Integrated within the exhaust system after the LNT and DPD, the new H2S Slip Catalytic Converter reduces H2S emissions contained in unburnt fuel, converting H2S into Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) through cyclic catalytic conversion. Utilising maintenance-free systems such as the DPD, LNT and H2S Catalytic Converter significantly reduces harmful exhaust emissions—promoting cleaner engine operation to Euro 5b standards—without the need of SCR additives such as AdBlue, or any additional driver intervention or maintenance.
Not only have Isuzu Engineers improved power and torque outputs, they've maintained real-world fuel efficiency. Depending on the MU-X model, fuel consumption figures return 7.8-8.3-litres/100km, during ADR 81/02 combined cycle testing. Benefiting from the absence of front axle hardware, the MU-X 4x2 range achieved lower combined fuel consumption results of 7.8L/100km and emissions results of 206g/km. Combined with the 80-litre diesel fuel tank, the All-New MU-X is capable of travelling vast distances between fuel-stops.

Fuel delivery is precisely controlled by a new high-pressure direct injection fuel system. The new fuel pump requires 20% less energy to operate and pressurises diesel fuel to over 250MPa, before it is atomised by new high-efficiency injectors—precisely spraying diesel fuel into the newly-engineered combustion chamber of each cylinder. New lightweight aluminium pistons have been heavily-revised with a tapered and wider combustion chamber, for optimised air-and-fuel ignition and thermal efficiency. Engine thermal efficiency has been further improved through the reduction of friction and heat dispersion, with the new aluminium piston crowns, skirts and gudgeon pins treated with anti-friction diamond-like carbon heat insulation. Keeping the new pistons in time with the valve-train is a robust, maintenance-free steel timing chain, which is now directed by a quieter, more efficient, double scissor idle gear set—that improves durability and dramatically diminishes engine rattle and vibrations.
Power and torque is transferred to the wheels via a reengineered, smoother and more-refined 6-Speed Aisin AWE6B45 II automatic transmission. Gear shifts are smoother, more-efficient and quicker than the preceding transmission, with an improvement of up to 0.2 sec in shift time between gears, with a more intuitive selection of ratios. Ensuring optimal efficiency during all conditions, a new oil pan design and an integrated Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Warmer and Cooler regulates ATF temperatures, prolongs viscosity and mitigates transmission wear and tear during the cold-start phase.
Front wheel hubs now benefit from maintenance-free sealed wheel bearings, which decrease operational friction and rolling resistance compared with conventional roller bearings. More cost effective across the life of the vehicle, these wheel bearings provide significant cost savings during scheduled services; requiring no periodic re-greasing or additional maintenance.
TERRAIN COMMAND 4x4
In keeping with four-wheel driver feedback, MU-X 4x4 models further benefit from a new, stronger and more-efficient 4x4 drivetrain. Controlling the vehicle's '4x4 Terrain Command' functions, the new transfer case multiplies drive by 2.482:1 for increased torque in 4WD-Low Range and features a new in-built Electronic Control Unit (ECU), Transfer Case Control Module (TCCM) with a raft of sensors which monitor vitals and a +15.3% thicker diameter output shaft for increased strength. With a new electronic actuator, shifts from 2WD-High Range to 4WD-High Range at speeds of up to 100km/h can be achieved in less than a second. Switching from 4WD-High Range to 4WD-Low Range also takes just under a second when stationary with 'Neutral' selected, an improvement over the preceding system that took over 2.5 seconds to engage.
With feedback in mind, new thicker and stronger Constant Velocity (CV) shafts are used across the front axle. Whereas drive to the rear wheels is transferred via a new, thicker one-piece propeller shaft. Measuring 108mm in diameter, this +13.6% thicker driveshaft is constructed from carbon steel for strength and durability.
Providing a new lease on traction when off-road, all 4x4 MU-X variants feature 'Rough Terrain Mode', an off-road electronic driver aid that maximises drivability in technical, slippery and rough conditions. An enhanced extension of the improved Traction Control System (TCS), Rough Terrain Mode minutely monitors wheel slippage using wheel speed sensors and precisely applies brake force to each individual wheel exhibiting wheel spin, which in turn redistributes torque to the opposing-wheel on the same axle with more grip. This maximises drive transfer to the surface by proportioning torque to the wheels with the most grip; for optimal driveability, tractability and torque transfer to the terrain, with little to no loss to momentum.
More than just a modernised diesel engine package, Isuzu engineers have refined and reengineered the entire powertrain to be more efficient, quieter and to deliver improved performance, in all conditions. Developed with local feedback in mind, the powertrain of the All-New MU-X is Isuzu's most advanced ever.
SAFETY COMES STANDARD - ISUZU'S INTELLIGENT DRIVER ASSISTANCE SYSTEM (IDAS)
With safety an intrinsic strand of the DNA architecture of the All-New Isuzu MU-X, Isuzu's Intelligent Driver Assistance System (IDAS)—a comprehensive suite of safety and convenience features that complement the driver and dramatically improves the level of safety for all occupants, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users—is standard across all variants. IDAS encompasses the main driving systems, combining Active Safety, Passive Safety and Driver Assistance technology into one complete package.
At the heart of IDAS is a Hitachi 3D Stereo Camera, a binocular camera system so advanced it can precisely detect and measure distance, size, velocity and depth of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists and other potential obstacles in front of the MU-X. With a threefold wider field-of-view than conventional monocular camera systems, this 3D camera system enables the MU-X to detect more subjects with a lower risk of miss-detection and take the necessary countermeasures to mitigate or dependent on the circumstances, prevent an incident.
IDAS has seen some extensive localised testing and validation, which has enabled Isuzu engineers to finely calibrate the Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR) for Australian roads. TSR automatically scans the road ahead for traffic and speed signs—including overhead gantry, school zone and digital speed signs—relaying the speed zone up ahead to the driver via the 4.2-inch Multi-Information Display (MID). If the Intelligent Speed Limiter (ISL) is currently active, that speed zone will automatically reset the ISL to the posted speed limit.
Studies shared by ANCAP have shown that Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) can lead to a 38% reduction in real-world rear-end accidents. The 3D Stereo Camera affords the All-New MU-X with the ability to detect obstacles, vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists, during the day or at night. Standard across all variants, AEB with Turn Assist combined with Forward Collision Warning (FCW) alerts the driver of an impending impact before applying the brakes to bring the vehicle to a complete stop—mitigating the severity of a potential impact, or avoiding it entirely. The Turn Assist functionality will intervene with similar effect when it detects that the driver is attempting to cross in front of the path of another incoming vehicle.
Combining convenience with safety, Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) with stop-and-go traffic functionality is standard on all MU-X variants. ACC will accelerate and decelerate with traffic all the way to a complete stop—remaining stationary for up to five-minutes—before accelerating with the flow of traffic, all the way back up to the predetermined max-set speed. ACC will actively maintain the pre-designated distance from the vehicle ahead, and when combined with Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) at speeds above 60kph, the MU-X will actively maintain the vehicle's position in the centre of the lane.
Studies show that the majority of multi-vehicle incidents occur during bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions. Misacceleration Mitigation (MAM) prevents the driver from unintentionally driving into the obstacle in front during slow speed situations of up to 10km/h. If a significant incident occurs, the Post-Collision Braking (PCB) automatically applies brake force to slow the MU-X to a stop, reducing the severity of a subsequent collision.
When enabled, the Auto Hold function of the new Electric Park Brake (EPB) will apply brake force to the wheels when the vehicle comes to a stop, preventing the MU-X from creeping forward in traffic and alleviating the risk of unintentionally rolling forward into the vehicle in front. For added safety, the Auto Hold function also engages the EPB whenever the ignition is switched off, the driver's door is opened or when 'Park' is selected with the transmission.
With around a quarter of all serious motorway incidents originating from driver distraction, drowsiness or inattentiveness. Driver Attention Assist (DAA) can detect when the driver starts to become drowsy or distracted, and prompts them to take a break.
The 3D camera system combines data collected from 24-GHz radar sensors housed within the rear bumper and allows IDAS to actively monitor and react to any potential hazards around the vehicle. Housing the radar sensors in the rear bumper allows the MU-X's Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) system to accurately detect other vehicles and motorcycles approaching from the rear. The radar system also works double duty as the vehicle's Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) system, which monitors approaching vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists from behind, when reversing from a parking space or driveway.
Lane Departure Prevention (LDP), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) and Emergency Lane Keeping (ELK) systems, will depending on the circumstances, either alert the driver when the vehicle is venturing out of the lane or will actively steer the MU-X back towards the centre of the lane at speeds above 60km/h.
The main IDAS Stereo Camera unit is mounted atop of the windshield, high-up and away from any potential hazards from debris when driven on- or off-road. Mounting the system high-up also increases the camera's range, field-of-view and depth perception. This enables IDAS to process more information from varied angles to identify and determine potential hazards earlier—allowing the system more time to react and alleviate the vehicle's approach.
Another significant benefit of IDAS is the seamless integration with accessories. With many MU-X owners opting to install frontal protection to their vehicles, Isuzu has engineered IDAS to work in conjunction with all Isuzu UTE Genuine frontal protection accessories, such as nudge bars and bull bars—including bull bars with an UHF aerial fitted. Coinciding with the launch of the All-New Isuzu MU-X is a range of Genuine Isuzu nudge bars and bull bars finished in black steel or polished alloy—with provisions to mount an UHF antenna and additional driving lights. These Isuzu UTE Genuine Accessories have been specifically engineered and calibrated to work in complete harmony with Isuzu's IDAS.
As testament to Isuzu's commitment to safety, inside the cabin are eight-airbags surrounding the driver and passengers; including dual front, dual side, dual full-length curtain, a front knee and a centre (far-side) airbag. The dual full-length curtain airbags covers all three rows, including the third row for holistic occupant protection. Whereas the addition of the centre airbag is relatively uncommon in the segment and protects front-seat passengers from clashing heads during an accident.
Constructed extensively using ultra-high and high tensile steel, the All-New MU-X's body is stronger and safer than the preceding model, with 980MPa ultra-high tensile steel used in the bulkhead, sills and body pillars. Designed with large deformation zones around the cabin capable of absorbing high-energy impact forces, the engineered crumple zones distribute forces over a wider area, bypassing the occupant cell. Through additional reinforcement in key areas, the occupant cell has been engineered to retain its integrity in the event of an impact. Constructed with twice the amount of high- and ultra-high tensile steel than used in the previous-generation, the All-New MU-X features 157 more body spot welds in key areas for additional strength and safety.
Standard across the range, a new array of sensors now control the Bi-LED headlights and windshield wiper operation, automatically turning on and off when needed. Fitted with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL), the new Bi-LED headlights are brighter, smarter and more-efficient at producing and throwing more light, with a wider and greater range. With Automatic Headlight Control, the system regulates the Bi-LED headlight light output; dimming between high- and low-beam when it detects an oncoming car, at a range of up to 600 meters away. Featuring auto-levelling, a cabin-mounted G-Force sensor measures vehicle pitch and automatically adjusts the angles of the Bi-LED projector globes to minimise road user glare. Providing even more light when needed, LS-U and LS-T variants feature additional LED fog lights, which are recessed into the front bumper for improved aerodynamics and pedestrian impact safety. All models feature LED combination rear taillights, which draw less power, last longer and illuminate quicker and brighter—for improved safety and visibility. The LS-T grade now benefits from an anti-glare Auto-Dimming Rear View Mirror, which automatically dims when necessary; significantly reducing glare from dazzling-headlights behind. The anti-glare function automatically turns-off when reversing, to maximise visibility.
Standard across the range, automatic windshield wipers detect rain and moisture on the windshield and automatically wipes when needed—varying in wipe frequency depending on the amount of rain detected. LS-U and LS-T variants also further benefit from flat wiper blades that integrate the washer jets within the wiper blade. This innovative system distributes washer fluid across the leading edge of the wiper blade when in use, allowing for a cleaner more effective wipe that uses less washer fluid and lowers the chances of streaking and chattering of the wiper blade. The new blades feature a new aerodynamic blade design, which decreases drag when not in use and a new reversing motor that periodically reverses the wiper blade seated against the glass to prevent unwanted debris build-up and material fatigue, effectively extending the wiper blade life by twofold.
Adding additional convenience and simplicity to the ownership experience, all MU-X variants feature a keyless entry with push button start, which is further enhanced on LS-U and LS-T models with the welcomed addition of Smart Entry and Start, Walk Away Door Lock (WADL) and Welcome Light. When the driver approaches the MU-X (LS-U and LS-T) and the key is detected within 2-meters, the Welcome Light function will illuminate the interior lights. The Driver can then unlock (and lock) the MU-X at the push of a button on either front doors or the tailgate. As part of the WADL, LS-U and LS-T drivers can leave their smart key in their pocket or bag and exit the cabin to have the vehicle automatically lock when the key is detected at least 3-meters outside of the vehicle. When the driver exits the vehicle, as part of the Coming Home Light the headlights will automatically illuminate the pathway ahead for a pre-set time. LS-T models further benefit from Remote Engine Start, which takes convenience and comfort to the next level by allowing the driver to remotely start the engine and precondition the dual-zone climate control air conditioning system to cool or warm the cabin, before stepping inside. Added security protocols scan for the smart key and keep the doors locked, preventing unauthorised entry to inside the car whilst Remote Engine Start is in use.
Correct tyre pressure management is often regarded as key to traction when off-road and to ride comfort, safety and longevity when on-road. In keeping with customer feedback, the LS-T features a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which monitors and relays individual tyre pressure vitals to the driver via the MID.
Providing additional safety and convenience, all models come standard with a high-definition reversing camera with dynamic guidelines, which aids drivers by envisioning vehicle trajectory with parking lines that move according to steering input when reversing. Proving useful with customers that tow, the reversing camera is centrally-mounted above the tow-ball which allows for easy reversing and hitching up of trailers. All models feature rear parking sensors with a guidelines displayed via the 4.2-inch MID, with LS-U and LS-T further benefiting from additional front parking sensors for complete coverage around the vehicle.
With a braked towing capacity of 3.5-tonnes and unbraked towing capacity of 750kg, all models come equipped with Trailer Sway Control (TSC) which intervenes if trailer sway is detected, bringing the vehicle and trailer back under control.

EXTERIOR
Dynamic and distinguished in design, the All-New MU-X evokes a sense of both toughness and elegance from all angles. The front façade draws your eye towards the unmistakably defined signature front grille; featuring the iconic double-horizontal accents that not only originates from Isuzu's commercial truck heritage, but nods to the recently-released third-generation Isuzu D-MAX Ute. Combining textures and elements befitting of luxury marques, LS-U and LS-T models feature chrome and tungsten silver finishes throughout the front, contrasting against the piano black and body hue, adding sophistication to timeless SUV design. Atop of the grille, 'ISUZU' lettering finished in signature chrome and contrasting piano black furthers the dynamic trend. Extruding from the grille, the continuation of tungsten silver underlines the aggressively-angled Bi-LED projector headlights, which features a unique LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) signature modelled from arrows. Angled-recesses in the bumper also shares inspiration from arrows, housing LED fog lights (LS-U & LS-T). The LS-M takes a dark turn in design, employing textured black and gunmetal grey across the grille, which further compliments the black sidesteps, rear bumper, door handles and door mirror finishes across the vehicle, which would otherwise be body coloured on the LS-U & LS-T.
This distinguished design continually flows across the front wheel arches; bulging from the bodywork to create that menacing, yet alluring front profile. Uniformed in design, ruptured flared angles across the rear completes the stance dictated from the front. Symmetric hard ridges flow from bonnet to the raked windshield, continuing along the roof atop. A distinguished array of sculptured crease lines run the length of the vehicle; starting at the front fenders and ending beyond the rear D-Pillar, seamlessly integrating into the rear design. Tastefully recessed LED combination taillights flank the rear tailgate, evoking a sense of dynamism and ruggedness which flows from the swollen muscular rear haunches, further accentuating the distinguished stance. LS-U and LS-T models take the design further, pairing chrome door accents across the base of the window frames that converge at a rear towards the roof spoiler. Tying the design together is full-length roof rails and sidesteps, both finished in tungsten silver.
Off-road focused 17x7" alloy wheels, wrapped in 255/65R17 Dunlop All-Terrain AT25 tyres are standard fit on LS-M. An upgrade in the form of striking nine-spoke tungsten silver alloys—modelled from the blades of a turbine jet engine—are standard on the LS-U. Measuring in at 18x7.5", these unique alloys are wrapped in 265/60R18 Bridgestone 684II tyres for all-weather performance and handling. Commanding presence and stance, the flagship LS-T features bold six-spoke, machined two-tone, 20-inch alloys—measuring in at 20x7.5". With 50% less side wall, these Highway-Terrain 265/50R20 Bridgestone 684II tyres offer improved driving dynamics and reduced tyre noise. Often seen as essential equipment when travelling on Australian roads, all models feature a full-size spare wheel with the LS-T equipped with a matching 20-inch alloy spare.
Along with the dynamic styling comes welcomed substance, through the reduction of drag and aerodynamic performance optimisation over the preceding MU-X. Up front, air spats in front of the wheels divert airflow towards the sides, which is channelled smoothly towards the rear by the wider sidesteps and recessed creases across the doors. Up top, the roof features a longitudinal channel which funnels airflow cleanly down towards the new integrated roof spoiler, which creates a venturi effect to minimise turbulent drag and lift at high-speeds. Minimising drag towards the rear, the LED combination taillights are recessed into the bodywork, further improving airflow across the body. These innovations improve overall aerodynamic performance; minimising drag for better efficiency, improving high-speed vehicle stability and lowering wind noise emissions.

Bathing the interior in soft light, each door features soft white LED ambient lighting, which elevates the interior experience and contrasts elegantly against the quilted leatherette door trim.
The entire interior has been further refined to maximise storage space, convenience and natural ergonomics. In lieu of traditional lever-actuated Parking Brakes, the MU-X features a new space-saving Electronic Park Brake (EPB). Featuring an intuitive Auto Mode, the EPB will automatically engage and disengage the Park Brake when the driver selects either 'Park', 'Drive' or 'Reverse' with the Transmission. A new Auto Hold system can be activated at the push of a button; intuitively maintaining brake pressure when the vehicle comes to a halt. This system prevents the MU-X from creeping forward in traffic and can conveniently hold the MU-X in the same position for up to five-minutes. Falling naturally in hand, the Automatic Transmission selector has been redesigned and modernised to give it a more precise and premium shift feel, with LS-T models featuring ambient lighting and a ceiling downlight above. Isuzu's 'Terrain Command 4x4' switch is now conveniently mounted on the centre console, freeing up valuable real-estate around the leather wrapped transmission selector (LS-U and LS-T) and EPB, allowing more space to accommodate larger drink bottles.
With a focus on passenger comfort and ergonomics, entry into the 2nd row has been increased by +25mm by moving the B-Pillar forward, with the added convenience of a grab handle. Compared with key ute-based SUV rivals, there is more leg, shoulder, hip and head room available to 2nd row occupants. It's a similar story in the 3rd row, with the new MU-X commanding more leg and head room when compared with the same rivals. A redesign of the 2nd row seat base increases 3rd row foot space by +10.6mm.
Compared with the previous-generation MU-X, each 3rd row seat is wider by +105mm across the seatback (525mm) and +41mm wider across the seatbase (467mm), affording 3rd row occupants more space and comfort. Climbing in and out of the 3rd row is easier than ever, with the 2nd row seat folding requiring 33% less effort to operate—a welcome improvement for children and smaller passengers looking to get in and out on their own. A redesign of the seat locking mechanism ensures that the seats safely and easily engage the floor locks with folded back up; allowing for the seats to unfold in a simpler motion. With long journey comfort in mind, new higher adjustable headrests improves occupant safety and comfort further, and both 2nd and 3rd row pews offer 12 levels of recline adjustment; reclining to a maximum angle of 22°.
Seats are now trimmed in two levels of upholstery; premium high-grade cloth on LS-M and LS-U and quilted leather-accented on LS-T. Both LS-M and LS-U front seats feature up to 6-way adjustment (4-way adjustment on passenger), with the LS-U further benefitting from power-adjustable lumbar support, which tailors the driver's seating to their individual preference. With feedback from customers in mind, the LS-T now features heated front seats, with improved 8-way power adjustment on the driver's seat with under-thigh adjustment, power adjustable lumbar support and 4-way power adjustment on the passenger's seat; as part of the LS-T's leather-accented seating. Across the range, both front seats have improved adjustability with up to 55mm of height-range adjustment—a 15mm more-range than the preceding model.
Extensive use of dual-density foam provides uncompromised lateral support and comfort for all passengers, whilst also absorbing and providing additional insulation from unwanted road vibrations. Improving on comfort and ergonomics further, all seats benefit from wider and more supportive seatbacks and seat bases for improved under-thigh support, with side bolsters that help secure occupants.
With a wider 2nd row seat design, a total of three Child Restraint Seats can be fitted across the 2nd row with solid top-tether anchorage points mounted on the back of the seatback, with the outer two seats featuring ISOFIX compatibility to fit a wide-range of Child Seats. Designed to be versatile, the 2nd row is wide enough with generous hip and shoulder room to comfortably accommodate an adult in the middle pew while two Child Seats are fitted to the outer seats.
STORAGE
Offering more storage solutions than ever before, all doors now feature space to accommodate a 1.5-litre bottle as part of the 12 drink holders available on-board. Improving on elements customers love, the famed pop-out drink holders below the dash-mounted air vents now feature a push-to-open mechanism, as does the dual drink holders in the 2nd row armrest—both of which can accommodate a common 600ml bottle or coffee cup. All models feature dual glove box storage (main is lockable), centre console storage, a coin and card box on the driver's side, map pockets behind the front seats and large door storage pockets. Optimising load space further, 2nd and 3rd seat rows can fold completely flat revealing an unobtrusive load area that is just a few millimetres lower than the boot load lip—making loading bulky items easier. The boot load lip is now 35mm higher off the ground and closer to the average hip height, which further aids in ergonomics when loading and unloading. On top of that, redesigned rear under-floor luggage storage folds up neatly, hooking onto the back of the 3rd row seats.
The tailgate and boot area has also been completely overhauled and optimised for easier use. Improving in functionality, the rear tailgate is now constructed using fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP)—which saves 5kg of weight from the rear axle and centralises sprung mass. The lighter tailgate now opens upwards to 1,850mm from the ground to the edge of the tailgate—an improvement of 35mm over the preceding MU-X. The LS-U and LS-T adds the extra convenience of an electronically controlled power tailgate. Equipped with a pinch prevention function that detects if an obstacle is in the way, and a memory position function which programs the tailgate to open to a predetermined height—ideal for low garages—the tailgate can be operated remotely via the key fob, from the button on the dash, or via the buttons on the tailgate. The system can detect when the vehicle is hitched up to tow and will disable operation to avoid the tailgate striking the trailer in tow; which can be overridden using the buttons on the tailgate.
Designed to be comfortable, spacious and versatile, the All-New MU-X introduces new levels of luxury and comfort for the entire family; featuring new-levels of fit and finish, interior inclusions, and comfort and ergonomics to improve the journey experience of all.
BODY AND CHASSIS
Designed with occupant safety in mind, Isuzu engineers have increased body strength and torsional rigidity by +10% through the adoption of ring-structured manufacturing design; which integrates the B, C and D-Pillars with closed cross sections. With a focus on vehicle dynamics, capability and safety, the new MU-X features a new body-on-frame chassis design, constructed extensively using high-tensile steel—which is close to four times the strength of conventional mild steel, but at a fraction of the weight. Top-shelf 980 MPa ultra-high tensile steel is extensively used throughout the structural cell, body pillars, bulkhead and sills for uncompromised strength and rigidity, less weight and improved occupancy safety. Leaner, stronger and optimised for maximum occupant safety, close to a third of the body (28%) now uses 440-980 MPa (megapascal) high- and ultra-high tensile steel in its construction. All up, compared with the previous-generation, the new body uses twice the amount of high- and ultra-high tensile steel in the construction. Focusing on strength and rigidity, compared with the previous-generation MU-X, an additional 157 spot welds have been added across key areas of the body during manufacture. Overall, the body is +10% stiffer and stronger in comparison with the preceding MU-X.
The roof structure has also been significantly reinforced to accommodate a payload of up to 100kg, a +66.6% improvement over the previous-generation. Under the body, extensive use of corrosion-preventative undercoats, sealants and inhibitors have been used to protect the body from harmful and corrosive elements, with Isuzu engineers focusing on the underside, mounting points and inner panelling. With the new design comes welcomed improvements to driver visibility, with larger and lower windows between the C-Pillar and D-Pillar. Six large shear body mounts replace six of the eight conventional body mounts seen in the predecessor—connecting the body to the chassis across a wider and more-even footprint, whilst absorbing road noise and vibrations from transmitting through the chassis to the body.
Extensive use of Ethyl Vinyl Acetate (EVA) foam throughout the body also significantly lowers noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) from entering the cabin. Offering significant reductions in road and engine noise, the interior dash bulkhead and floor is comprehensively lined with a third layer of insulation, when compared with the preceding MU-X. Additional insulation has been added inside the front doors and body pillars, whereas the cabin doors feature overlapping rubber seals running the full circumference of each door, with window frame rubber seals containing a deeper centralised insulated internal channel for greater longevity and cabin insulation from unwanted NVH.
Stronger, lighter and more durable, the new chassis is the backbone of the MU-X, enabling this favoured nameplate the increased capability to tow up to 3.5-tonnes. Engineered for durability and robustness, yet remaining energy absorbent in the unlikely event of an impact, the ladder-frame chassis improves on the predecessor's strengths and is extensively constructed using high-tensile steel for superior frame rigidity. Through the adoption of wider (+14%) and taller (+34%) longitudinal chassis rails with 157 more spot welds in optimal areas, reinforcement through an additional lateral crossmember and a new rear subframe cradle, the All-New MU-X improves longitudinal and torsional rigidity by +25% and +23% respectively. This chassis and body combination is the strongest and most durable ever seen in a MU-X, featuring improvements in corrosion-resistance, rigidity, capacity, quietness and safety.
BRAKES, SUSPENSION AND STEERING
With occupant safety in mind, Isuzu engineers have improved the braking performance and functionality of the All-New MU-X with the introduction of larger and more powerful brakes and a new Electronic Park Brake (EPB) with Auto Hold that makes stop-start traffic a more relaxed affair. Front brake discs measure 320mm in diameter by 30mm in width—an increase of +20mm over the previous-generation's 300mm by 30mm discs—while the rear discs measure 318mm in diameter by 18mm in width. The new vented discs sport a significantly larger swept surface area, and increased clamping pressure due to a higher brake booster ratio. All of which improves stopping power, performance and cooling efficiency, particularly when loaded up or towing.
Improvements to ride, comfort and handling have been made by redesigning the suspension—a suspension tune engineered for Australian customers looking to tow. Improving on the independent front suspension (IFS) design for improved ride and handling, the new double wishbone design sports new high-mounted upper-control arms. This improves control of wheel geometry during compression and extension, whilst optimising the roll centre geometry and improving vehicle handling and dynamics. The wider span upright arms further helps to maintain camber and caster angles and geometry composure; maintaining a wider contact patch with the road and vastly improving cornering stability and performance. An increase in front spring rate on 4x4 models further stiffens the front axle; enhancing chassis composure, corner stability and front axle capacity, without compromising ride or handling. A heavily redesigned 34mm-diameter front anti-roll bar further aids in optimising roll centre geometry and reducing body roll. Overall, the improved IFS design ensures the All-New Isuzu MU-X remains stable, predictable and comfortable when on-road, while maximising axle droop, flexibility and traction when off-road.
The five-link coil spring rear suspension has been completely redesigned to handle an increased payload when towing, whilst still remaining comfortable when unladen. Stiffer than the previous MU-X, rear coil spring rate has been increased to 2.56kgf/mm, allowing for increased payload capacity when loaded up, with minimal vehicle pitch and squat. Redesigned to reduce unwanted body roll and improve vehicle composure, the 23mm diameter anti-roll bar has a 36.6% wider span than the previous model—measuring 1,250mm in width across the axle up from 915mm—which better manages sprung mass in corners. Overall, the new coil spring suspension offers more flexibility, load-carrying capacity and enhanced handling and dynamics than the preceding-generation MU-X.
Steering feel and weight has been significantly improved through the introduction of Electric Power Steering (EPS). Calibrated to provide generous levels of feedback and tactility whilst feeling light and manoeuvrable, the new EPS system is lighter, more efficient and requires significantly less maintenance than the outgoing hydraulic system. The new EPS system also works in tandem with IDAS, integrating with assistance features such as Lane Keep Assist System and Lane Departure Prevention, which can steer the vehicle back towards the centre of the lane when lane drifting is detected. Improving the driving experience around town, slow-speed manoeuvrability has been further improved with a turning circle of only 11.4 meters, a 200mm improvement over the preceding model.
DIMENSIONS AND CAPACITIES
Engineered to maximise interior space and on- and off-road capability, the new MU-X measures in at 4,850mm in length, 1,870mm in width and 1,825mm in height—which is +25mm longer, +10mm wider and a -35mm lower roofline than the preceding MU-X. Stretching the wheelbase to 2,855mm—an increase of +10mm—improves interior dimensions and road handling, stability and dynamics. While lowering the vehicle height by -35mm and increasing the ground clearance by +10 improves both on- and off-road performance. Overall the MU-X is wider, has a lower roofline, a longer wheelbase and sports shorter front overhang with improved ground clearance, approach, departure and ramp-over angles.
With the increase in chassis strength and rigidity, comes an increase in capacity, with the All-New MU-X equipped with the highest Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of any Isuzu SUV ever; 2,700kg on 4x2 and 2,800kg on 4x4 models. The increase in GVM permits drivers that tow with more usable payload capacity. Gross Combination Mass (GCM) has seen a sizeable increase by up to +250kg; to 5,900kg on 4x2 and 4x4 models, allowing for more flexibility with towing configurations. Allowing for more room for accessory and frontal protection fitment, front and rear axle capacities have also improved by +100kg and +50kg respectively, to Front: 1,450kg and Rear: 1,700kg. All models have been engineered to tow a maximum of 3.5-tonnes braked, and 750kg unbraked, which is among the highest in the large-SUV class.

ON-ROAD AND OFF-ROAD
With a new lighter and stronger body and chassis, suspension setup and wider wheels and tyres, the All-New MU-X has seen significant enhancements in ride and handling, both on- and off-road. The geometry of the independent front suspension has been completely overhauled, with new high-mount upper-control arms and thicker anti-roll bar improving the roll centre geometry of the vehicle for improved vehicle dynamics, stability and handling. Rear suspension has also been extensively revised, with a new five-link coil spring setup now optimised for increased payload capacities and towing up to 3.5-tonnes, without compromising ride and handling. Larger and wider wheels and tyres benefit traction, handling and stability; measuring in at up to 7.5" wide on LS-U and LS-T models, the wider rim features 265/60R18 or 265/50R20 tyres, with +10mm wider rubber wrapping each wheel—providing a larger contact patch with the road. With improvements made to cabin comfort, noise suppression and ergonomics, along with the driver assistance systems such as Lane Keep Assist System and Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go functionality as part of the IDAS, the All-New Isuzu MU-X is arguably one of the most composed and comfortable large-SUVs on Australian roads.
Correct tyre pressure management is often regarded as key to traction when off-road and key to ride comfort and longevity when on-road. In keeping with customer feedback, the LS-T features a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), which monitors and relays vital individual tyre pressure status to the driver via the MID.
With off-roader enthusiasts in mind, Isuzu engineers have improved the All-New MU-X's off-road tractability, durability and capability. Ensuring traction and torque transfer when off-road, 'Rough Terrain Mode', an off-road biased electronic driver aid, distributes torque and drive to the wheels with the most grip; maximising drivability in technical, slippery and rough conditions. The MU-X has always been at the top-of-the-class with its ground clearance and with the new range improves on its clearance furthermore, with the LS-M measuring in at 230mm and the LS-U and LS-T clearing 235mm. With the shorter front overhang as part of the comprehensive redesign of the body and chassis, comes a welcomed improvement to the Approach, Departure and Ramp-Over Angles, which now measure in at 29.2°, 26.4°, and 23.1° respectively, on the range-topping LS-T.
Engineered with the hardware to get you out there and back home again, all 4x4 variants are equipped with 'Terrain Command' Control, which allows the driver to seamlessly switch between 4x2-High, 4x4-High and 4x4-Low drive modes at a twist of a switch, in under a second. The dual-range transfer case is more efficient and durable, transferring drive to the front axle via a stronger front shaft and a pair of stronger and thicker CV shafts. At the rear, a new stronger one-piece carbon steel tail shaft replaces the outgoing item and transfers torque to the rear differential—featuring an electro-magnetic rear differential lock, which is conveniently activated at a press of a button. Drawing air from the front of the vehicle, the engine air intake has been heavily-revised with a labyrinth of sealed airways that enables the MU-X to wade through water of up to 800mm at a constant pace of 7km/h. Unique to the Australian-specification MU-X, a pre-fabricated pathway in the internal wheelhouse panel allows for easy installation of an engine snorkel. Mitigating the likelihood of water ingression during water crossings, differential breather hoses are routed and vented clear above the 800mm wading depth capacity.
Extensive 1.5mm-thick steel and 5mm-thick poly-composite underbody protection protects vital powertrain components from debris and ground strikes when off-road, whereas the Australian-exclusive 80-litre polyurethane fuel tank is encased with an additional layer of aluminium shielding for additional protection.
The new independent front suspension and rear coil spring suspension design improves overall flexibility and articulation over the preceding MU-X to maximise traction and drivability. When combined with the new body and chassis affording impressive clearance angles, class-topping ground clearance and improvements made to the powertrain and underbody protection, the All-New MU-X is more capable at handling any terrain than ever before.
ISUZU UTE GENUINE ACCESSORIES
With feedback from customers in mind, extensive research and development has been invested in the platform to ensure the compatibility of the on-board IDAS components with Genuine Isuzu UTE Accessories—enabling owners to customise their vehicle to their own specific taste. A full catalogue of parts and accessories is available through local Isuzu UTE Dealers, with over 40 accessories available exclusively for the All-New MU-X at the time of launch. With an extensive range of towing and frontal protection options, component protection and lighting options and dress-up accessories, the entire range has been tested and developed for local conditions, completely IDAS compatible and come backed by a comprehensive 3-year or 100,000km warranty.
SERVICE PLUS 6-7-7
Testament to the confidence instilled within the very DNA of the All-New MU-X, all models are backed by IUA's comprehensive ownership care package program, Service Plus 6-7-7; encompassing a 6 Year/150,000km Warranty, up to 7 Years Roadside Assistance when serviced through Isuzu UTE Dealers and 7 Years Capped Price Servicing (CPS).
Through improvements and efficiencies made within the powertrain, the cost of maintaining an All-New MU-X through CPS is around 12% less than the preceding model—with 7 years worth of CPS totalling only $3,373—making it among the most cost-effective large-SUVs to maintain.
