A major NSW based transport company is recording tyre mileage gains of up to 40 per cent since switching to Kumho KRD01 tyres on drive axles and up to 35 per cent on steers compared with other tyres from other brands.
Macleay Valley Transport based in the NSW mid-north coast town of Kempsey operates a fleet of 50 prime movers and more than 70 trailers hauling general freight, offering a broad service to the NSW Mid North Coast as well as providing an interstate transport services for its customers, principally along the Eastern seaboard to Sydney, Brisbane and North Queensland.
Company principal Bob Fuller says that the company switched to the Kumho KRD01 about four years ago on advice from a local tyre dealer and good reports from other operators as well as good pricing.
"The driving force was the price because the Kumho's were very competitive and in this business it all about cents per kilometre and making sure your costs are low without affecting reliability," said Bob Fuller.
"Having said that the Kumho's have performed exceptionally well and are returning much better mileage than anything else," he added.
In fact MVT regularly gets better than 200,000 km from the Kumho's on the steer axles and better than 250,000 km from the KRD01 on the drive axles.
"We have tried some other prominent brands and they struggle to reach 200,000km on the steer and 250,000 from the drive, so the Kumho's are well ahead on price and on longevity," he added.
"As well as that the drivers really like them because they perform and we have minimum punctures so it has been a very good relationship with Kumho since switching to them four years ago," said Bob.
The MVT fleet covers more than three million kilometres each year and now employs more than 80 staff including 65 drivers, making it one of the biggest employers in the Kempsey region.
Company principal of MVT Bob Fuller was the manager of the operation in 1997 which was then owned by a division of the Toll empire. Bob suggested he would be interested in purchasing the company. To his surprise Toll agreed and MVT was born.
The company kicked off with four trucks and half a dozen trailers and has built a solid business and reputation working for leading clients including The Warehouse Group, Metcash, Leighton Holdings, Onesteel, Stramit, Bevchain, the NSW Department of Education and CSR Humes.
MVT is is deeply committed to safety and as well as being highly aware of good tyres in maintaining a strong safety performance on the road it maintains full accreditation in Trucksafe which includes fatigue management, mass management and vehicle maintenance.
All of its drivers live in and around Kempsey and with its headquarters being located approximately half way between Sydney and Brisbane it enables MVT to manage long distance transport through a series of planned driver changeovers ensuring compliance with legislated driving hours and fatigue management as part of its overall safety strategy.
