- MG Motor will donate up to 3,000 EV chargers around Australia in three years
- Multi-million-dollar project will roll out over three years across metro and regional centres
- MG Motor also announces new electric vehicle naming convention; 'Plus EV'
24 November 2021 – MG Motor Australia and New Zealand is set to reinforce its position as a leader in the electric vehicle space, pioneering an exciting new initiative that will see the roll-out of accessible charging infrastructure across Australia.
Over the next three years, up to 3,000 electric vehicle charging stations will be deployed to support local businesses across Australia, including hotels and resorts, which represents a multi-million-dollar investment by MG Motor.
Peter Ciao, CEO for MG Motor Australia and New Zealand, said: "In Australia, purchase price is the biggest barrier to adoption of electric vehicles, closely followed by concern at the lack of public charging infrastructure.
"When we launched the MG ZS EV in late 2020, we offered the model at a price that delivered great value to customers. This has, in turn, changed the conversation about pricing of electric vehicles in Australia.
"We have achieved our ambition of delivering value and driving discussion. Now, we take the next step by supplying charging hardware that can be used by many electric vehicle owners in Australia.
"This initiative underlines MG Motor's commitment to the Australian community which has supported us."
The new EV charging network – based on MG's own award-winning Aurora charge hub – will be donated to operators spanning the entire country.
These chargers will not only enhance each venue's customer experience, but will also reassure electric vehicle owners that they can drive around Australia with ease.
MG Motor has opened applications to prospective venue operators. Interested parties may submit their expressions of interest at mgelectric.com.au, with the first 300-1000 set to be delivered within 12 months.
MG evolves its electric vehicle naming convention.
MG Motor has also announced a rebranding of its electric vehicles in Australia and New Zealand. All future MG models that feature hybrid powertrains will use 'Plus EV' as the variant designator, helping to simplify the naming structure across its wider model line-up.
In line with this decision, MG has renamed its current MG HS Plug-In Hybrid to MG HS Plus EV with immediate effect. The MG ZS EV model name remains unchanged.
"There is still confusion in the Australian market about electric vehicle technology," said Mr Ciao. "By renaming our MG HS electrified vehicle as Plus EV, we can provide greater clarity to the market.
"The renaming of the MG HS Plug-In Hybrid to Plus EV makes it clear to the buyer that they are purchasing an electrified vehicle.
"The MG HS Plus EV gives you the best of both worlds, combining remarkable performance and technology with low-emission practicality, and offering MG customers more choice in their day-to-day lives.
"Explore by day, charge by night; the Plus EV allows our customers to travel to the same destinations as they would in a conventional petrol-powered vehicle without concern."
The HS Plus EV Essence is available for immediate delivery in Australia and New Zealand, and MG Motor will have news to share soon about an exciting new HS Plus EV variant that will provide the same leading-edge, environmentally friendly technology in a more value-focused package.
