The Peugeot 206 has received a new 1.6 litre 16 valve engine, delivering dramatically improved performance and reduced fuel consumption.
The new engine, which is fitted to both XR (3 & 5 door) and XT (5 door) models, features 16 valves, double overhead camshafts and Bosch ME 7.4.4. fuel injection. These enhancements, along with a 11.0:1 compression ratio, lift the performance of Peugeot's entry model into hot hatch territory.
Power output is increased from 67kW to 82kW at 5750 rpm, while torque rises from 137Nm to 147Nm at 4000rpm. The benefits are immediately apparent on the road. With a 0-100km/h of just 9.4 seconds and a standing 400 metres in 16.8 seconds, the 206 delivers levels of performance which are quite simply outstanding in its class.
Despite this, Peugeot's engineers have also succeeded in improving fuel economy. On the City cycle the 206 now consumes 7.2 L/100km, a 10% improvement, whilst on the Highway cycle a consumption of just 5.2L/100km is almost 19% lower than the outgoing eight valve engine.
Retail prices for the new 206 now start from $20,990 including air conditioning for the XR 3 door, $21,990 for the XR 5 door and $22,990 for the luxurious XT 5 door.
Meanwhile the 206 GTi, the benchmark compact sports hatch, has received larger 6.5J X 16 inch alloy wheels of a new design, to provide even better levels of roadholding and stability.
Mr Chris Downie, General Manager for Peugeot Concessionaires Australia, commented: "These latest changes to the 206 range confirm its title as the most desirable hatch in the small car class."
