A FUSION OF 21ST CENTURY DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY
Peugeot has officially unveiled its 607, a luxury sedan combining new levels of comfort and driving pleasure with ground-breaking technical innovation and superb design.
Due for its first public showing at the Frankfurt Motor Show (September 14th, 1999) the 607 will go on sale in Europe in the first quarter of the year 2000.
According to Shane Priest, Managing Director of Peugeot Concessionaires Australia (PCA), "When it arrived in 1998 the 406 Coupé symbolised Peugeot's new sense of creativity and adventure. And now the 607 joins it as the ultimate expression of Peugeot design".
At 4.9 metres long (sitting on a 2.8 metre wheelbase) the 607 bears the traditional Peugeot hallmarks of clean, classic lines and outstanding dynamics.
It combines these with a luxurious specification and a host of technical innovations to produce a car that is not only beautiful to look at and exciting to drive but also supremely comfortable and exceptionally safe.
Some features introduced by the 607, weapons in the battle to improve road safety and driver comfort, are "world firsts" for a production car, including:
- Automatic illumination of hazard warning lights under hard braking
- A nine-setting suspension system for even greater comfort and control
LUXURY SPECIFICATION
Richly equipped, the 607 features a further 13 cutting-edge systems which deliver maximum safety, comfort and environmental performance.
- Electronic sensors to detect loss of tyre pressure
- A heat-reflective windscreen to aid cabin temperature control
- Automatic headlights which illuminate in rain or poor light
- An emergency braking system to dramatically reduce stopping distances: If the brake pedal is depressed rapidly, indicating an urgent braking situation, but pedal pressure is inadequate, the electronic system automatically increases brake pressure to an optimal level, reducing stopping distances by up to 25 percent.
- Curtain airbags inside the roof for optimum occupant head protection (as well as dual front and side airbags)
- An Electronic Stability Program (ESP) for better control of braking, steering, acceleration and stability
- Laminated side windows
- Central locking with individual remote control operation for doors, windows, boot lid and seat position
- A rear bumper sensor to aid reversing
- Automatic dipping of doors mirrors while reversing and automatic folding while parking
- A new twin-mode automatic transmission with adaptive automatic, sport and winter modes as well as a sequential, manual override function
- Automatic rain-sensing windscreen wipers
- A combined radio / mobile phone system
ON-BOARD TECHNOLOGY
In Europe a range of engine options will be available although the most likely power-plant for Australia is a 156 kW, quad-cam, 24-valve V6 featuring variable inlet timing and electronic throttle control.
The 607 has more than two dozen microchips connected on-line (by Multiplex wiring) to a Built-in System Interface (BSI - intelligent service box) which closely resembles the on-board technology now used in most modern commercial aircraft.
This flagship model also boasts a range of more conventional luxury features including a 12-speaker CD stereo, full leather trim, electrically adjustable front seats, an on-board navigation system, climate-control, ABS brakes and 17-inch alloy wheels.
According to Shane Priest, "Local introduction is at least 12 months away and pricing is yet to be confirmed".
