The much awaited first release of the exclusive Vespa 946 looks
destined to become highly sought after by collectors when released
in Australia later this year in limited numbers.
Overwhelming demand for model which was first shown in Milan
2011 has seen Piaggio evolve the model to become an annual "Fashion
Collection" release. Built once annually with the first collection
designated the 'Ricordo Italiano' collection.
The Australian Piaggio and Vespa dealers attended a grand black
tie launch of the Vespa 946 which was flown in especially for the
event. Following the dealer launch an exclusive press unveiling
highlighted Australia's first glimpse of this highly sort after
model.
The hand crafted design is widely praised and the response has
been excellent. Australia's assigned shipment has been
oversubscribed by wholesale orders and soon to become sold out to
customers.
Gavan Moody Sales Manager for Vespa Australia commented 'To see
946 for the first time is quite inspiring with craftsmanship and
technology showcasing a totally new Vespa generation." Also adding
"It is quite easy to see how such energy of interest has been
created around 946"
In a break from all current models the 946 represents a totally
new Vespa and while the name and styling cues reference the
original 1946 prototype, the model is designed to project the Vespa
brand into the future.
Vespa's signature, the all steel body is instantly recognisable,
however this new design is a an intricate construction of pressed
steel with over 320 welding points, many by hand, which now
includes components produced from aluminium for the front guard,
rear quarter panels and handlebars.
A long wheel base with new 12 inch wheels highlight the unique
frame design and a saddle which can only be described as ' an
industrial art form' highlights the significance of this new
Vespa.
Features never seen before on Vespa models include full LED
lighting, LCD dash, horizontally mounted suspension, ABS and
Traction control.
Piaggio also recognise the need to respect the environment with
the 946 powered by the new 125cc 3 valve engine. The fuel injected
unit designed produced by Piaggio to maximise fuel economy and
emission outputs. The 946 also showcases the first rear disc brake
fitted to this motor.
The first collection will be available in classic black or white
with early indications that the following annual collections will
see updates in styling and selective colours. Each 946 customer
will receive an initial 'welcome gift' prior to delivery and all
946 Vespa's will be supplied with an authentication disc to be
fixed to the body confirming the collection year with the VIN
etched onto the rear side. The handbook is also authenticated with
the VIN and stamped from the factory with an authentication
seal.
Significant model introductions or changes have heralded the
most collectable models built by the brand with the GS 150, Super
Sport 180 and Rally 200 some of the most prized models amongst
collectors and with 946 possibly the most significant model in
Vespas history, this first release looks destined to be the most
desirable.
946 goes on sale in early November with an MLP of $11,990 and
comes with a warranty of 2 years unlimited klms.
