As electric and hybrid vehicles gain popularity in Australia, questions about their safety have also come to the forefront. To address consumer concerns and debunk myths, ANCAP SAFETY has put a crash-tested, hybrid-powered vehicle on display at the Sydney International EV AutoShow.
Happening at the International Convention & Exhibition Centre (ICC) Sydney from today through until Sunday (8-10 November 2024), the highlight of ANCAP’s presence at the show is a sit-in display of one of its crash-tested wrecks – the GWM Cannon Alpha – giving show-goers a close-up view of how alternative-powered vehicles perform in ANCAP crash tests.
The display demonstrates the real-world safety standards ANCAP encourages across all new vehicles sold in Australia, including the safety integrity of high-voltage battery systems and passenger protection in the event of a crash in, or with, an electric vehicle.
“This event is a great way for consumers to get hands-on with ANCAP and engage with our team of safety experts to learn about the rigorous testing and evaluation that electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) vehicles undergo to ensure they meet the same crash protection and crash avoidance standards as traditional petrol and diesel vehicles,” said ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Carla Hoorweg.
“Our presence at the Sydney International EV AutoShow provides consumers with the opportunity to learn more about the key safety aspects to look for when researching their next purchase and some of the precautions our test laboratory staff take when preparing and testing EVs.”
ANCAP safety ratings are available for more than 150 electric, hybrid, hydrogen and PHEV vehicle models currently on the market.
"With the rise in popularity of electric and hybrid vehicles, it's more critical than ever for consumers to understand their safety features and performance, and we’re here to provide clarity and confidence to those considering making the switch,” Ms Hoorweg said.
“The theme of our presence at the AutoShow is ‘Safe AND Green’, and our take-home message is to look for a car that is both safe AND green. This information is readily accessible and free on the ANCAP website.”
