ANCAP SAFETY, Australasia's independent voice on vehicle safety, has today released a three-star safety rating for the Hyundai i30 Sedan. This rating applies to i30 Sedan hybrid and facelifted petrol vehicles sold into the Australian market from October 2023 (excluding i30 Sedan N).

  • Hyundai i30 Sedan variants introduced from October 2023 hold a three-star ANCAP safety rating.
  • Safety rating performance limited by scores inAdult Occupant Protection,Vulnerable Road User Protection andSafety Assist.
  • Petrol sedan variants built prior to June 2023 are not covered by this rating and are UNRATED.

The Hyundai i30 Sedan’s best performance was seen in the assessment area ofChild Occupant Protection, with an overall score of 81%. A score of 71% was achieved forAdult Occupant Protection.

The assessment areas ofVulnerable Road User Protection andSafety Assist were identified as lower performers. The performance ofSafety Assist limited the i30 Sedan to three-stars, due to the absence of an advanced autonomous emergency braking (AEB) capabilities, including AEB Head-On and AEB Crossing (T-Bone), and the inclusion of blind-spot monitoring as standard.

Hybrid variants of the Hyundai i30 Sedan were added to the model’s line-up in February 2024. A mid-cycle facelift to petrol variants was introduced from October 2023, and petrol vehicles built after the mid-cycle facelift are also covered by this rating.

Carla Hoorweg, ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, said: “The Hyundai i30 is a popular choice within theSmall Car segment, and the addition of the hybrid powertrain this year broadens consumer interest. This underscores the importance of having an independent safety rating available for this model – so consumers and fleets can make informed decisions around safety and determine which model is right for them.”

“The Australian Government’s recent New Vehicle Emissions Standards (NVES) is helping to provide vehicle manufacturers with the confidence to introduce more alternative-powered models into the Australian market, yet we had hoped Hyundai would have used this mid-cycle facelift opportunity to elevate the safety performance of the i30 Sedan.”

“Hyundai has shown that they can deliver five-star safety, and we believe the i30 Sedan could achieve this with the right safety enhancements. Smaller vehicles are inherently more vulnerable due to their size, so it’s particularly important for manufacturers to prioritise safety to protect occupants and other road users.”
