    Previous generation safety still fitted to today’s new cars
    Australia and New Zealand’s independent consumer voice on vehicle safety is strongly reminding new car buyers and fleet purchasers to check the ANCAP SAFETY rating before purchase, with two zero-star ratings published today.
    Local testing of the MG 5 sedan and Mahindra Scorpio SUV has shown both models unable to achieve a safety rating any higher than zero stars due to a range of limitations – in both physical crash protection and active collision avoidance performance.  In many areas, this was due to the fundamental omission of safety features that have been commonplace in new cars for many years.

    Kia, Mercedes-Benz and BMW each achieve five stars
    Following testing against the latest 2023-2025 criteria, the Kia EV9, Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV and BMW 5 Series have each achieved five-star ANCAP safety ratings.
    The electric Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV scored maximum points for its protection of the driver in the side impact test, for the front seat passenger in the frontal offset test, and for the protection of child occupants in both the side impact and frontal offset tests.
    A centre airbag to protect front seat occupants in side impact crashes is fitted, however evidence to demonstrate that the airbag would protect a range of occupant sizes was not provided by the manufacturer and points for this area of assessment were not awarded.

    How safe was the car you drove in the 1990s?
    Taking stock of the past 30 years of independent vehicle safety testing, ANCAP reflects on the vehicle models first rated when testing began in 1993.
    Commonplace on Australia's roads at the time were the Ford Falcon, Mitsubishi Magna, Holden Commodore and Mazda 626 – just to name a few.
    These, together with the Honda Accord, Subaru Liberty, Nissan Pintara, Toyota Camry and Volvo 940 all featured in the first round of safety ratings released in 1993, in an effort to inform consumers about the safety features, or lack of, that were fitted to their everyday drives.

    ANCAP and Euro NCAP renew close ties with signing of MOU.
    ANCAP and Euro NCAP have this week signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will cement the strong ties already in place between the two regional safety organisations and pave the way for closer collaboration in the future.
    Euro NCAP and ANCAP first signed an MOU in 1999 to assist with the alignment of test protocols and results, with this renewed MOU signalling the continued strength of ANCAP and Euro NCAP's shared mission and future ambitions.     ANCAP awards five-star safety rating to Mercedes-Benz EQS
    ANCAP SAFETY, Australasia's independent voice on vehicle safety, has today released a five-star safety rating for the battery electric Mercedes-Benz EQS saloon (sedan). The EQS showed high levels of protection to vehicle occupants and good collision avoidance capability when tested against ANCAP's 2020-2022 assessment criteria.
    Full points were awarded to the Mercedes-Benz EQS for adult occupant protection in both the side impact and oblique pole tests.  The driver and rear passenger in the full width frontal test also scored full points – making the EQS just the fourth vehicle to achieve this result under ANCAP's 2020-2022 test protocols. A high score in this test demonstrates a good combination of vehicle structure and restraint performance.

    Five-star ANCAP safety rating for MG 4 Electric.
    Australasia's independent voice on vehicle safety, ANCAP, has today released a five-star safety rating for the MG 4 Electric. The MG 4 Electric performed well across each aspect of ANCAP assessment under the 2020-2022 rating criteria.
    The MG 4 Electric is fitted with a range of collision avoidance technologies including autonomous emergency braking, active lane support, and fatigue monitoring. Good results were seen for its performance in AEB Cyclist and some AEB Car-to-Car test scenarios, including when turning across the path of an oncoming vehicle. Mixed results were seen in AEB Pedestrian test scenarios. AEB Backover functionality, designed to detect and respond to pedestrians in reverse, is not available.

    Chery re-enters the Australian market with improved safety

    Elevating its safety offering well above that of its predecessors, and to more stringent test and rating criteria, the Chery Omoda 5 offers sound levels of structural and active safety protection. Previous offerings - the Chery J11 (2 stars) and Chery J1 (3 stars) - achieved ANCAP safety ratings well below the expected standard when rated back in 2011.

    The final safety rating for 2022 has today been published by independent vehicle safety authority, ANCAP, with the new GWM Tank 300 ending the year on a high with five stars.
    Hybrid variants of the GWM Tank 300 - which went on sale in Australia this month - have achieved a five star ANCAP safety rating. Full points were recorded for all four critical body regions of both the driver and front seat passenger in the frontal offset test. This high score was however offset by the maximum 4.00 point penalty for vehicle-to-vehicle compatibility as the front structure of the Tank 300 was shown to pose a high risk to the occupants of an oncoming vehicle, if struck.(1)

    Australasia's independent voice on vehicle safety, ANCAP, has today released ratings for the Land Rover Range Rover, Land Rover Range Rover Sport, Nissan X-Trail and Toyota Corolla Cross, with four more SUVs achieving five-star safety ratings as the 2020-2022 test and rating criteria draw closer to an end.
    All petrol, diesel and PHEV variants of the three-row Land Rover Range Rover and its partner model, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport achieved five-stars with full points scored for its protection of adult and child occupants in the side impact test and the driver in the oblique pole tests. AEB car-to-car and AEB car-to-pedestrian (forward) performance also scored well, however active avoidance of pedestrians while reversing is not offered.

    It is with sadness that ANCAP acknowledges the passing of its inaugural Chief Executive Officer, Mr Nicholas Clarke. Nicholas (Nick) Clarke served as ANCAP Chief Executive Officer from January 2012 to September 2015 following on from his long-term role as ANCAP Business Manager held from 2005.
